Design and Build a sys­tem to auto­ma­ti­cal­ly inspect and cor­rect spe­ci­fied dimen­sio­nal cri­te­ria on a pre­cise metal com­po­nent used in a medi­cal device. Auto­ma­ti­cal­ly bend to form and modi­fy the com­po­nent until it is veri­fied to be in com­pli­an­ce with the dimen­sio­nal spe­ci­fi­ca­ti­ons.

Pro­blems We Sol­ve 

Our cus­to­mer was in need of a method to dyna­mi­cal­ly inspect and cor­rect spe­ci­fied dimen­sio­nal cri­te­ria on a pre­cise metal com­po­nent used in a medi­cal device. Ide­al­ly this pro­cess would be able to auto­ma­ti­cal­ly bend to form and modi­fy the com­po­nent until it was veri­fied to be in com­pli­an­ce with the dimen­sio­nal spe­ci­fi­ca­ti­ons.

Tools We Use

The inspec­tion sys­tem mea­su­red the pro­fi­le of a ‘clip’ at two sta­ti­ons to cap­tu­re dimen­sio­nal data in dual pla­nes. The visi­on sys­tem in the first sta­ti­on moni­to­red the X‑axis dimen­sio­nal infor­ma­ti­on as a cus­tom desi­gned, ser­vo con­trol­led too­ling modi­fied the clip in small incre­ments, repea­ting the pro­cess until the clip was wit­hin estab­lis­hed spe­ci­fi­ca­ti­ons. The clip was then trans­fer­red to the second sta­ti­on whe­re an addi­tio­nal visi­on inspec­tion sys­tem moni­to­red the Y‑axis dimen­sio­nal infor­ma­ti­on as a second set of cus­tom desi­gned, ser­vo con­trol­led too­ling modi­fied the clip in small incre­ments, repea­ting the pro­cess until the visi­on sys­tem veri­fied the clip was wit­hin the cri­ti­cal tole­ran­ce befo­re it was trans­fer­red to the manu­al load/unload posi­ti­on.

The inspec­tion sys­tem inclu­ded a Cognex Check­point III visi­on sys­tem with dual, high reso­lu­ti­on came­ras and cus­to­mi­zed ligh­t­ing to enhan­ce con­trast. This was inte­gra­ted with a four axis ser­vo posi­tio­ning sys­tem. The machi­ne guar­ding inclu­ded a safe­ty light curtain and safe­ty cir­cuit and pneu­ma­tic moti­ons which were ope­ra­ted with direc­tio­n­al con­trol val­ves.

Solu­ti­ons We Pro­vi­de

The auto­ma­ted visi­on sys­tem, inte­gra­ted with com­po­nent forming tech­no­lo­gy allo­wed the repeata­bi­li­ty of the pro­cess to meet rigid part tole­ran­ces with 100% relia­bi­li­ty. The new sys­tem drasti­cal­ly impro­ved the pro­cess yiel­ds and pro­duc­ti­vi­ty for our cus­to­mer.
